FM-1 is Texas' first farm-to-market road. It was paved by the state at the urging of Temple Lumber Co. and two local gas companies. They convinced the state to pave the road and keep their trucks from getting stuck in the mud. The FM road arrangement was so successful, it spread throughout the state. The state still maintains the road.
